About
My most recent project is the ‘Bedtime Prints’ series.
It feels like forever since the Summer when I made the camping lino prints. I feel ‘Traveller’ is the best thing I’ve ever done.
I’m also still very excited about my last book ‘The Shipwrecked Sailor’.
My new ‘Sketchbook’ blog will be full of on-the-go drawings made on paper or my ipod. It will also include my random thoughts about drawing. Please email thoughts, drawings and links for this. Nothing on the Sketchbook blog is for sale-it’s all there to be enjoyed on line.
I am an artist and illustrator living in the seaside town of Hastings, England.
I self publish my visual books as ‘The Pearbox Press’. My first ‘Pearbox Press’ books, the ‘Storm Tree Stories’, were published in 2006. They take childhood rural holidays as a starting point but mix dream and reality freely. Along with my most recent book ‘The Shipwrecked Sailor’ they are a labour of love; an attempt to make enchanting visual poetry for both adults and children.
I love getting my hands dirty printmaking and make my own handmade prints, using techniques such as woodblocks, lino and mono printing. My books and prints are available at various galleries and shops in the UK.
I recently illustrated Richard Evans wonderful new volume of poetry ‘Orbiting’. A much appeciated opportunity to make some really ambiguous, mysterious images.
I write and illustrate for children and have had 5 books published by Walker Books. My Favourite of these, ‘Francis The Scaredy Cat’ was read out on the BBC, and got very good reviews. Others include ‘Mr Trim and miss Jumble’ and ‘Scoot on Top of the World’. I illustrate for children in all kinds of contexts; for museums, theatre and magazines. I often write and edit alongside illustrating for collaborative publishing projects such as for my community books.
I did a degree in printmaking (Hull) and an MA in illustration (St Martins, London).
My songwriting always flows on alongside my visual work. I perform my songs with Telltale Hearts.

Hi Ed and Rachel!
It’s Lucy and Martyn here – old friends from Cambridge! It’s been so long since we’ve been in touch, and I just came across your blog by accident and I’m very delighted to find you!
Congratulations – I can see you’ve had another baby – Flynn. We’ve had a baby boy this year too, Oscar, he’s 4 months old.
We moved back to Lincolnshire 2 years ago, we live in a village near the Humber Bridge, half way between my folks in Louth and Martyn’s in Beverley.
Ed – your work looks lovely on this site. Your picture that you gave Martyn all those years ago (The Moon tells me stories …) has pride of place in Oscar’s bedroom. I’d like some more! I will order some of your books, I think – The Gardener and the Bird Watchers.
Hope you are all well, please get in touch and we can exchange photos of children!
Much love,
Lucy and Martyn and Oscar xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi Ed
I came across The Birdwatchers book in Leeds Art Gallery Shop and recognised your name. I have 1/5 of The Attic Room (1994) that I bought at a degree show at Sunderland Poly/Uni. You do not say, above, that you were at Sunderland….maybe I’ve got it wrong and the show had works from students at other Universities as well. I really like The Attic Room, an interesting mixed media work; there is always something new to see in it. I like to support young artists by buying work from student shows. Who knows I may spot the next Damien Hirst. Interested to see the direction your work is taking
